Specialist in Internal & Geriatric Medicine

Director

Director of the Scarborough Memory Program since 2003, serving the Greater Toronto area and beyond. She spearheaded a Memory Clinic in 1995, one of the first multi-discipline clinics in the country, based at a general hospital.

Her academic background began as a registered nurse, before obtaining degrees in biology, psychology (focused on cognition and behavior), and medical science. She obtained a degree in medicine at Memorial University, followed by a four year credentialing in Internal Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, before completing a two year fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) at the University of Toronto. Her career has included experience as an academic teacher, administrator, researcher, lecturer, specialist clinician in the community, hospitals, nursing homes and chronic hospitals. She has been politically active on behalf of older adults, producing laws that have eliminated mandatory retirement in Ontario and the greatly restricted use of physical restraints in Ontario hospitals. She has served on many provincial and regional committees in health care planning. She has served on pharmaceutical advisory boards of all the drugs approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s in Canada since 1986 as well as for many that did not. This provided an excellent opportunity to review unpublished scientific studies in Alzheimer’s.

She is proud to be sponsor of the prestigious Scholarship in Geriatric Medicine at her alma mater at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

She leads the way in Canada in the recognition of insulin resistance as causal to Alzheimer’s Disease and has created the first Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic in Canada.
